Regan Douglas Wheeler, 54, was shot to death in his driveway at his Paulding County home in Dallas, Georgia, on October 13, 2005. That morning he had gone to Rome to help care for his mother and work the family’s roughly 40-acre property, then returned home expecting to shower and leave for his Lockheed Martin shift. His wife and daughter were at school; the house should have been empty. Investigators say someone had broken into the residence while the family was away and that Wheeler likely surprised the intruders when he returned. Shell casings were found near his body, and witnesses later reported an unfamiliar blue SUV in the neighborhood around the time of the shooting, but no definitive suspect was identified.
Investigators checked Wheeler’s background and associations while treating the case as a burglary-related homicide. At one point Dexter Ward Presnell was indicted after a fingerprint was thought to link him to the scene, but the identification was later found to be erroneous and charges were dropped after he had spent about 16 months in jail; no trial or conviction followed.
If anyone has information about the break-in, the unfamiliar blue SUV, or observations from the Dallas neighborhood on October 13, 2005, please share what is known.
