Captain Robbie Edward Bishop, 35, a 12-year veteran and captain with the Villa Rica Police Department known for his drug interdiction work, was killed in the line of duty on Wednesday, January 20, 1999. At about 11:00 am he stopped a vehicle on I-20 roughly 18 miles east of the Alabama line. While writing a citation the driver shot him in the head. A passing motorist later found him slumped over the wheel; he was airlifted to a local hospital and pronounced dead at 3:30 pm.

The shooter was identified as 32-year-old Jeffrey McGee of Schenectady, New York. McGee fled after the shooting and was captured near Toronto, Ontario, in early February 1999. He was convicted of first-degree murder on February 1, 2001, and sentenced to life without parole. Bishop’s funeral drew more than 7,000 attendees and a procession over 25 miles; a stretch of Highway 61 and the local justice building were later dedicated in his honor. Captain Bishop was survived by his wife and two young children.

If anyone knew Captain Bishop, his family, or was on I-20 that day, does anything from that morning still stand out?
