On the night of April 7, 1991, 27-year-old DeKalb County Police Officer Wade Barrett responded to a disturbance at an apartment complex shortly before midnight. Hearing a woman scream from an upstairs unit, Barrett entered to investigate and encountered a home invasion robbery being carried out by five individuals posing as police officers. He was met with gunfire; one bullet penetrated an opening in his protective vest and struck his heart. Barrett was transported to DeKalb Medical Center and pronounced dead at 12:13 a.m. on April 8, 1991, leaving behind a son.
The investigation led to the arrest and prosecution of at least one participant. In October 1992, Ammon Sumrall was convicted by a DeKalb County jury of felony murder and several related charges for Officer Barrett’s death and received two consecutive life sentences plus five years.
Does anyone have additional information about the four other suspects or the case’s remaining leads?
