On November 16, 1990, 27-year-old Jeff Robinson and his girlfriend, 27-year-old Luan McMichen, were shot to death at the trailer where they lived in Douglas, Georgia. The killings occurred during an encounter with Luan’s estranged husband, Kim Anthony McMichen, who arrived armed and had previously threatened and harassed both Luan and Jeff. A neighbor described hearing McMichen yell he had something for them shortly before shots were fired. Jeff was struck in the right ear and died instantly; Luan was shot in the heart and died within minutes.

At trial in 1993 McMichen’s account shifted from claiming amnesia to asserting self-defense in Robinson’s death and that Luan’s death was accidental; his own expert witness had testified the amnesia claim was fabricated. Prosecutors presented testimony of prior abuse by McMichen against Luan, including choking, rape, threats, and prior firearm threats toward Jeff. The jury convicted McMichen on two counts of malice murder and the court sentenced him to death.

Did anyone in Douglas remember signs of the couple’s troubles or McMichen’s threats before November 16, 1990?
