In the winter of 1988, 26-year-old Virginia Ginger Porter Moore of Berrien County, Georgia, was killed after an argument about a planned vacation. According to reports, her then-boyfriend William Earl Lynd shot her in the face with a .32 caliber derringer at their home on December 22. Moore briefly regained consciousness, stumbled to the front porch, and was shot a second time. Lynd then placed her, still alive, in the trunk of her car; after hearing noises from the trunk he stopped, opened it, and shot her a third time.
He later told a sheriff he was tired of Moore thumping around in the car. Lynd buried her body in a shallow grave in Tift County, left the state, and sold the murder weapon in Ohio before abandoning Moore’s car in Florida where police later found it. Two days after Moore’s death, authorities say Lynd shot and killed Leslie JoAnn Starkey in Ohio during a robbery. Lynd surrendered to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department on New Year’s Eve 1988 and was later indicted in Berrien County for malice murder and kidnapping with bodily injury.
What details about Moore’s life or the timeline surrounding December 22 might help explain what happened that night?
