On the evening of October 14, 1985, 55-year-old disabled African American resident Auzzie Douglas Sr. was found shot in his Glynn County, Georgia, home after returning there just before 8:00 p.m. His wife, Ruby Douglas, arrived home from work and saw a young man running from the house; inside she found her husband on the living room floor, bleeding from his ear. He had been shot in the head just behind his left ear, shot in the chest, and had a gunshot wound on the web of his left hand.
Investigators tied Michael Anthony Cohen to the scene: his fingerprints were recovered from a window screen used to gain entry, a watch belonging to the victim was found in Cohen’s possession, and a pistol Cohen sold for $10 that evening was ballistically linked to the bullets that killed Douglas. Cohen was arrested, convicted by a Glynn County jury of malice murder, burglary, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and the jury recommended the death penalty. On December 23, 1986, Cohen was sentenced to death.
