Euel Thomas Smith Sr., 36, was a Bibb County Board of Education police officer killed on Friday, April 22, 1983, while on duty at Central High School in Macon, Georgia. A Navy veteran known as Bubba, he had worked for the school police department for 11 years and was a familiar presence protecting students and staff. While transporting a man encountered on campus, a struggle occurred and Officer Smith was shot with his own service weapon; the shooting was witnessed by hundreds of students.
The man taken into custody was described in reports as dangerously mentally ill and had been stopped for similar behavior weeks earlier. He was arrested and later convicted of involuntary manslaughter. Officer Smith’s death prompted changes in the school police department’s procedures, use-of-force policies, and equipment, and in November 2013 the campus police headquarters was renamed in his honor. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter.
If anyone remembers Officer Smith, the events at Central High that day, or the man involved, please share what you know.
