On February 17, 1981, in Leesburg, Georgia, 34-year-old Ivy Joyce Powell Barnes and her two daughters, three-year-old Amber Marie and older daughter Stephanie Renee, were found shot to death in their home. The killings shocked the small community and prompted a criminal investigation that focused on a local youth.
The case went to trial, where the central issue was the young defendant’s mental state at the time of the killings. Defense lawyers argued not guilty by reason of insanity and presented expert testimony; prosecutors offered evidence and witness accounts of the events. The jury accepted the insanity defense. The young man was found responsible for the deaths but was committed to a mental health facility rather than sentenced to prison.
The verdict closed the courtroom chapter but left Leesburg to reckon with the loss of a mother and her two children. Does anyone remember the Barnes family or have information about the case that could add context to what happened?
