Charles Lee Herrington Sr. was a 30-year-old deputy with the Glynn County Sheriff’s Office when he was killed on April 17, 1979. Assigned to serve divorce papers that day, he was shot in the back and died in the line of duty. Herrington had served with the sheriff’s office for three years and left behind a wife and four children.
The person responsible for the shooting was not immediately caught; the case went unresolved for years. In 1993 authorities arrested a suspect, who was later sentenced to ten years for voluntary manslaughter and was released in 1999 after serving part of that sentence.
Does anyone have memories of Deputy Herrington or information about the events of April 17, 1979?
