On April 13, 1974, Marion Jones Miller, a Black female, was ambushed and fatally shot in Muscogee County, Georgia, while riding with Army Captain Patrick A. Doe. When Miller screamed, Mulligan reportedly shot her multiple times to eliminate her as a witness.
Investigators say Mulligan recruited a friend from the Marine Corps, Timothy A. Helms, promising payment to assist. The two men allegedly spent the night in a Columbus hotel under assumed names, met Captain Doe the next day, and later left together in Doe’s car when the shootings occurred. A fingerprint on the car reportedly matched Mulligan, and Helms was granted immunity in exchange for testimony describing the planning and attack.
Mulligan was tried, convicted on the murder charges, and later executed by electrocution on May 15, 1987, for Miller’s murder after appeals. Did anyone who knew Marion Jones Miller or Captain Doe see them in Columbus in early April 1974 or have information about the men they were with that day?
