Johnny R. McCline, a 13-year-old seventh grader at Mason-Clark Middle School in East St. Louis, was killed in a drive-by shooting on November 19, 2022, in the Washington Park community of St. Clair County. Three other teens were also struck in the same incident; they survived with injuries while Johnny succumbed to his wounds.
Family and community responses were immediate and visible. A vigil at the Roosevelt Homes public housing complex featured orange balloons and candles arranged to spell his nickname, J9. His mother, Kysha Davis, remembered him as the life of the party who liked football and making music videos. East St. Louis School District 189 activated its Crisis Team to support students and staff affected by the shooting.
No arrests or suspects have been identified and the investigation remains open. If anyone has information about the shooting, please come forward to assist the investigation.
