On April 12, 2022, 20-year-old Rayvell E. Lofton was found dead inside a home in the 600 block of Saint Andrews Circle in Rantoul, Illinois. The Rantoul Police Department responded to a possible shooting at about 7:50 p.m.; Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup pronounced Lofton dead at the scene at 9:30 p.m. An autopsy later confirmed he died of gunshot wounds.

Investigators developed leads that resulted in the arrest of 18-year-old Quionte D. Chaney of Champaign on July 25, 2022. U.S. Marshals took Chaney into custody at the Champaign County Courthouse; he was charged with Lofton’s murder. Officials say Automated License Plate Readers, local residents and the Rantoul Police Department all contributed to locating him. The investigation remains active and authorities are seeking additional information.
