Laquita Michelle Sullivan, 37, of Greenville, Illinois, was shot and killed on the evening of February 10, 2022. Illinois State Police responded to a report of a shooting in the 600 block of East South Avenue; officers found Sullivan deceased from gunshot wounds. She was married to Russell Lamar Sullivan and was a mother of seven. She worked at the Comfort Inn and was involved with Greenville First Christian Church.
Investigators say a 9mm handgun was fired, and a red Dodge Charger was seen fleeing the scene. The probe led to the arrest of 28-year-old Greenville resident Demarcus Gurlly, who was charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and obstructing justice; some charges allege he fired the fatal shots, while others allege responsibility for another person’s actions. Authorities reported Gurlly attempted to conceal the firearm and he was held on $1 million bond. Another person, Kiondre Fitzgerald, was later found critically injured after the Charger was involved in a high-speed crash and subsequently died.
Anyone who knew Laquita or who has information about the shooting, the red Dodge Charger, or the events that night is asked to come forward.
