Montrell Scott, a 24-year-old Black man from Freeport, Illinois, was shot on West Dexter Street on February 10, 2022 and died the next day after being airlifted to Rockford. He was found with multiple gunshot wounds and taken first to a local hospital before transfer; police described the shooting as gang-related.

In the investigation that followed, officers impounded a vehicle and identified two persons of interest. In May 2022, authorities arrested 22-year-old Christopher Scott of Monroe, Wisconsin; he was charged with two counts of First Degree Murder, one count of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm and one count of Aggravated Discharge of a Machine Gun. A trial for Christopher Scott was scheduled for January 2025.
