Trenton Jones, 27, of Champaign, Illinois, was killed during a violent home invasion in Urbana on December 20, 2021. Officers found Jones in the 900 block of North Division Street with fatal stab and gunshot wounds to the chest; the Champaign County Coroner, Duane Northrup, pronounced him dead at the scene. Preliminary autopsy findings listed the combined effects of the stab and gunshot wounds as the cause of death.

Investigators determined the home invasion was part of a scheme by four suspects to lure Jones to the location and rob him of cash. Four people were arrested. Ryan O. Mason, 32, later admitted to firing a handgun at Jones and pleaded guilty to murder in October 2022; Mason received a 28-year prison sentence after agreeing to testify against a co-defendant. A co-defendant, Erion Davis-Murdock, was convicted in September 2022 of personally firing a World War II-era rifle that caused Jones’ fatal wound.
