Justin K. Capp, 32, was shot and killed on November 18, 2021, as he and 36-year-old Terrance Haynes were leaving a gym after a recreational basketball game near South Galena Avenue and West Pleasant Street in Freeport, Illinois. Both men were struck while sitting in a car; they were taken to FHN Memorial Hospital and died of their injuries. A third occupant of the vehicle was not wounded.

Justin, born October 22, 1989, in Monroe, Wisconsin, served in the United States Army from 2008 to 2011 and had been deployed to Iraq. He was known in his community for fishing, deer hunting, basketball and support for his mother’s daycare business. The Freeport Police Department has explored leads including possible links to local gang activity and the possibility the victims were unintended bystanders, but investigators have not identified suspects and no arrests have been announced.

Justin’s mother, Robbie Capp, has urged anyone with information to come forward and has started a fundraiser to help police acquire additional surveillance equipment. Does anyone in the Freeport area have information that could help this investigation?
