Early on September 20, 2021, 25-year-old Hispanic male Javier Alcantara Jr. was found shot to death in the driver’s seat of a 2014 Chrysler 300 at the Citgo on the corner of Sunset Avenue and North Green Bay Road in Waukegan, Illinois. First responders arrived just before 5:00 a.m.; paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene and the Lake County coroner later confirmed multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators documented shell casings near the pumps, began canvassing the area and reviewing surveillance video, and reported a preliminary on-scene account that the shooter fled in an SUV heading south on Green Bay Road; the only suspect detail released then was male Hispanic.

By that afternoon the case was classified as a homicide and police asked for tips. No arrest, definitive suspect identification, or motive had been announced in the initial week of reporting.
