Che Allen Hearn, known as Butta, was a 31-year-old man from Zion, Illinois, who died of a gunshot wound to the chest on September 17, 2021. A lifelong Waukegan resident and a basketball fan known for his smooth shooting, he left behind a daughter, an unborn child, and many grieving family members and friends.

Officers responded that morning to shots fired in the 1700 block of Joanna Avenue in Zion and found Hearn critically wounded inside his apartment. Evidence indicated the attack was targeted: rounds were fired from the lawn outside the residence and struck him while he was inside. Investigators linked a brief, heated encounter earlier that morning at a Kenosha tavern with 28-year-old Tavares Reed of Waukegan. Reed reportedly traveled to Hearn’s apartment after the dispute and fired several rounds into the unit.

An arrest warrant for first-degree murder was issued for Reed on October 15, 2021, and he was later located and taken into custody. Does anyone have information about Hearn’s last day, his movements that morning, or the encounter at the tavern?
