Joseph Edward Geyman was 51 when he was fatally shot at his Tunnel Hill, Illinois, home on the night of August 28, 2021. A correctional officer and small business owner born June 24, 1970, in Centralia, he lived and worked in Johnson County and was married to Monica Ann Montgomery; he was the father of four children.

According to reports, the shooting followed an argument over coronavirus vaccines. Geyman’s half-brother, 68-year-old Larry D. Cavitt, pulled out a handgun and shot Geyman in the head; there was no prior physical altercation before the gunfire. Geyman was pronounced dead at the scene by responding officers from the Illinois State Police and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
