Thora Afton Chamberlain was 14 when she vanished in Campbell, California, on November 2, 1945. She was walking with friends to a football game when a man in a blue Plymouth sedan, later identified as Thomas Henry McMonigle, told her he needed a babysitter. Despite friends being present, Thora got into the car and never returned.
Investigators quickly focused on McMonigle, who had a criminal history that included assaults and an attempted rape. After leaving California for Illinois and later returning, his inconsistent statements and an attempted suicide on a bus brought FBI attention. He reportedly confessed to shooting Thora with a .32-caliber revolver and disposing of her body off a cliff known as Devil’s Slide. Thora’s body was never recovered, but personal items linked to her were found in places connected to McMonigle.
What details about Thora’s last day or those who saw her might help fill remaining gaps in the case?
