Marshawn Pettis, a 24-year-old African American man from Waukegan, Illinois, was shot and killed on June 22, 2021. Officers responding to reports of gunfire around 8 p.m. in the 2100 block of Williamsburg Drive found Pettis lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy by Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek confirmed the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear. The Waukegan Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division has been pursuing numerous leads but has not identified any suspects or made arrests. Authorities say a separate, unrelated shooting that night left another man in his 20s hospitalized in stable condition.
Pettis is remembered by family and community as a loving father, son, and friend with a strong sense of humor. Who has information about what happened on Williamsburg Drive that night?
