Gerald Wiley, a 35-year-old African American man, was shot and killed on June 7, 2021, in Madison, Illinois. The shooting followed an attempted robbery at a gas station where Wiley and his wife were present; Wiley pursued a group of juveniles by car. The pursuit ended near Fourth Street and Highland Avenue when 17-year-old Derek Miller shot Wiley. Wiley’s vehicle struck a tree after being shot. He was transported to Gateway Regional Medical Center and died shortly afterward. Wiley’s wife was injured in the crash and survived after hospital treatment.

The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis assisted the investigation with about 20 investigators; police say they followed more than 60 leads and executed multiple search warrants. Derek Miller was charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery, and aggravated discharge of a firearm. Three other juveniles were charged in juvenile court with first-degree murder and armed robbery; their identities were not disclosed because of their age.
