Daviontae Sims-Friar, 24, was shot and killed on March 24, 2021, in the 2700 block of Washington Street in Waukegan, Illinois. Officers responded to reports of gunfire around 4:40 p.m. and found him with multiple gunshot wounds; he was taken to Vista East Medical Center and pronounced dead. The Lake County coroner ruled the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds.
The Waukegan Police Department identified a suspect shortly after the shooting. Court records show 21-year-old Maxwell J. Murphy was charged with first-degree murder; investigators say Murphy fired shots at Daviontae’s vehicle as it was pulling into a gas station and then fled in a light-colored sedan. Murphy was arrested and booked into the Lake County Jail on April 16, 2021, held on $5 million bond with a preliminary hearing set for May 13, 2021.
Daviontae’s family and community remember him for his humor and vibrant personality; he was a son, brother, and father. If anyone witnessed the shooting or has information about the incident, please come forward.
