Brenda Jo Poss Barnes, 62, of Sheridan, Illinois, and her husband Gregory Scott Barnes Sr. were found dead at their residence after a violent incident on the night of March 16–17, 2021. Brenda was born May 10, 1958, in Aurora and had worked in customer service, known for her contagious smile and service at BP and Walmart. She was a mother and grandmother.

Authorities say the episode began when 37-year-old Donald Fredres of Sandwich attempted to break into his ex-wife’s home, shattering front windows and injuring her with broken glass. Fredres then went to the Barnes residence and fatally shot both Brenda and Gregory. He was charged with multiple counts including murder with intent to kill, murder with strong probability, and aggravated discharge of a firearm; bond was set at $5 million. A manhunt ended when Fredres was found walking in a field near the Sheridan Correctional Center; no weapon was recovered at that time.

The community mourned the loss of the couple. Does anyone have information about Brenda, Gregory, or events that night that could help clarify what happened?
