Gregory Scott Barnes Sr., 62, and his wife Brenda Jo Barnes, 62, were found dead at their Sheridan, Illinois, home on March 16, 2021. Both were fatally shot; investigators determined the two deaths to be a double homicide. The couple were described as active in their community — Greg owned a drywall company and Brenda worked in customer service at BP/Walmart — and their killings shocked the small town where they lived.

Authorities identified 37-year-old Donald Fredres of Sandwich, Illinois, as the suspect. Fredres, the ex-husband of the Barnes’ daughter, allegedly broke windows at his ex-wife’s home that same night, causing injuries from broken glass, then went to the Barnes’ residence and shot Greg and Brenda. He was found the next morning walking through a field near the Sheridan Correctional Center and taken into custody without incident. The LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office led the investigation and searched for the weapon; Fredres was charged with first-degree murder in the couple’s deaths and with attempted murder and aggravated discharge of a weapon related to his ex-wife.

Did anyone in Sheridan or the surrounding area have interactions with the Barnes family or notice suspicious activity around March 16, 2021?
