On February 17, 2021, 19-year-old Jocari Chapman, an African American male who lived in Markham, Illinois, was fatally shot in Calumet City. Officers responding to reports of a shooting found Chapman unresponsive in a vehicle near 153rd Street and Buffalo Avenue around 3:15 p.m.; he suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died hours later. A 17-year-old boy was also shot in the same incident and survived after treatment at a local hospital.
Investigators with the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force and Calumet City Police say initial reports indicated the shooting may have been tied to a robbery plot. Cook County prosecutors later charged 17-year-old Nehemiah Dotson with murder, alleging Dotson and others used a fake Facebook account to impersonate a woman and lure Chapman to the meeting that ended in the shooting. The case draws attention to gun violence and the use of social media in facilitating crimes.
If anyone knew Jocari or has information about the events that led to his death, please share what you know.
