Damia Smith was 15 when she was critically wounded on January 9, 2021, during a shooting spree that moved from Chicago into Evanston. She was riding in a car with her mother on South Halsted Street when she was shot in the head and later died at Comer Children’s Hospital nearly a month after the attack.
Authorities identified 32-year-old Jason Nightengale as the shooter. Investigators say his rampage began in Hyde Park and included shootings at a CVS and an IHOP in Evanston; he shot seven people and killed five, including Damia. Nightengale posted videos in the days before the violence showing guns and making statements about Satan, and his family said he had been struggling with mental health issues. Officials have not announced a clear motive.
Damia was a sophomore at Morgan Park High School, a member of the school dance team and a praise dancer at her church. If anyone knew Damia or has information about her in the days before January 9, please share what you remember.
