Hassan Sampson, 23, was killed on November 23, 2020, in the parking lot of the Sav-On Liquor and Wine and BP station on Carlyle Avenue in Belleville, Illinois. St. Clair County deputies arrived shortly after 8 p.m. and found Sampson critically injured; he was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
According to reports, Sampson and two others approached 23-year-old Devan Hill in the lot. Hill fired a single shot that struck Sampson and then called 911, saying he acted in self-defense because of a past history with Sampson and the others. Hill was charged with felony aggravated unlawful use of a weapon for possessing a firearm he did not legally own and was held on $30,000 bond.
The case has prompted community concern about violence and raised questions about the role of self-defense claims and illegal gun possession in the shooting. Does anyone have information about what happened that night or knew Sampson or the other people involved?
