John Michael Betscher, 63, was found dead in Decatur, Illinois, on November 14, 2020. He owned and operated JB’s North, a liquor and convenience store on North Calhoun Street. The Macon County Coroner ruled his death a homicide, listing multiple gunshot wounds to the neck, left shoulder, and back as the cause.
The Decatur Police Department opened an investigation. On February 19, 2021, 23-year-old Dangelo D. Foster was arrested and charged with Betscher’s murder; police say Foster allegedly pulled up to the store’s drive-thru window during a robbery and fired several shots that struck Betscher. Foster was taken into custody at the Macon County Courthouse on an unrelated matter before the murder arrest.
On August 16, 2022, the murder charges against Foster were dismissed without prejudice. Foster pleaded guilty to aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer, a Class 4 felony, and was sentenced for that offense. The investigation remains open and the family is seeking answers.
If anyone knew John Betscher, worked at or visited JB’s North, or has information about the shooting, please come forward.
