On August 24, 2020, 46-year-old Shafath Khan was found dead in a second-floor unit at the Waters Edge condominium complex in Glendale Heights, Illinois. His four-year-old son, Salman Khan, was also found dead after a fire broke out in the unit. Preliminary autopsy results reported both victims had gunshot wounds to the head, and witnesses heard a loud boom before the fire.
Glendale Heights police say three people were on the second floor when the explosion occurred. Officers rescued a six-year-old from the unit with minor injuries but were unable to re-enter because of heat and smoke; they then helped evacuate the building. Deputy Chief Brandon Oliver said there is no threat to the community and no one is currently in custody. The DuPage County Coroner, Richard Jorgensen, has not yet determined whether the deaths are homicides or suicides, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
If anyone saw or heard anything at the Waters Edge complex on August 24, 2020 that could help investigators, please come forward with information.
