Victor Cazares Jr., a 27-year-old Hispanic man, was shot and killed on June 1, 2020, in front of the Super Espiga grocery store on the 4900 block of 14th Street in Cicero, Illinois. He was unarmed and was standing at the storefront attempting to protect the business from looters when he was struck in the head; the Cook County Medical Examiner ruled the cause of death a gunshot wound to the head. Victor was transported to Mount Sinai Medical Center in Chicago and pronounced dead at 7:31 p.m. that evening.

His death occurred amid widespread unrest in Cicero following the killing of George Floyd, when clashes between protesters and armed residents escalated. Another man, Jose Gutierrez, 28, was also shot and killed that day; a separate arrest was made in Gutierrez’s killing, but no arrests have been announced in Victor’s case. The family has held vigils and protests, and has filed a lawsuit alleging town employees circulated a photo of Victor’s bloodied body on social media with a caption implying he was looting; Cicero police opened an internal affairs investigation into the photo.

Cook County Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. If anyone has information about what happened to Victor, please come forward.
