Daniel W. Walter, 28, of rural Indiana, was fatally shot on April 25, 2020, in Danville, Illinois. Marshall allegedly ordered Walter out of the vehicle, shot him four times beside a detached garage, then returned after attempting to flee and shot him five more times before taking Walter’s phone and identification.
Walter’s body was found several hours later and identified at autopsy the next day. Forensic specialists matched shell casings at the scene to a Taurus 9mm handgun. Marshall and his girlfriend are reported to have driven Walter’s Ford F-150 to Belvidere the following day and abandoned it when it broke down; police recovered the truck on April 29, 2020. Both were arrested on August 18, 2020, during a traffic stop in Danville; Marshall was allegedly in possession of the Taurus 9mm, a Colt .45, and methamphetamine pills.
A federal jury returned five guilty verdicts against Marshall on August 7, 2024. The trial included evidence that Marshall tried to obstruct justice by getting his girlfriend to write false statements taking responsibility for the weapons and drugs and denying knowledge of Walter’s killing. Marshall’s sentencing was scheduled for December 9, 2024, at the U.S. Courthouse in Urbana, Illinois. Does anyone have information about Walter’s movements in Danville on April 25, 2020, or knew him personally?
