John Edward McMillian Jr., 32, of Bethalto, Illinois, was shot to death on December 19, 2019, in a residence where two other people were also killed. He was born September 19, 1987, in Alton and is survived by his mother, Teresa Ferguson; his children, John Edward McMillian III and Kenzlee Peyton McMillian; and siblings Christopher, Nicholas, and Chelsea McMillian. John enjoyed music, played guitar, and loved baseball.

Authorities say the shooting was part of a three-victim homicide that also took the lives of 59-year-old Shari Yates and her 30-year-old son, Andrew Brooks. Investigators allege the killings were committed during a multi-state spree that began in Birmingham, Alabama, and continued in Bethalto. Two people, Brady Witcher and Brittany McMillan, were charged in connection with the crimes; Brittany McMillan pleaded guilty and received life imprisonment, while Witcher was scheduled for trial in January 2022.
