Steef Giovanni-Corniel, 21, was shot and killed in River Grove, Illinois, in the early hours of December 15, 2019. He was taken to Loyola University Medical Center, where the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office listed multiple gunshot wounds as the cause of death and ruled the case a homicide.
According to police reports, a violent episode followed dinner the evening before. The couple returned to the girlfriend’s Elm Street apartment, where she says he struck and choked her and threatened to kill her and her mother. She told police she shot him in self-defense to stop the attack. River Grove police detained the girlfriend from December 14 to 16, 2019, expecting murder charges, but the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office declined to charge her, citing insufficient evidence. The River Grove police chief described the death as murder, while the State’s Attorney’s Office said the evidence did not support charges. The investigation remained open and was continued at the request of the State’s Attorney’s Office.
Steef’s family has said they believe charges should be filed and that a jury should decide the matter. Does anyone have information about the couple’s interactions or the events at the Elm Street apartment the night of December 14–15, 2019?
