Jonathan Wilkins, a 40-year-old African American man, was killed on December 13, 2019, outside a liquor store near 149th Street and Chicago Road in Dolton, Illinois. Around 8 p.m. he was approached by two people who attempted to rob him; during the encounter he was shot multiple times. He was taken to Ingalls Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead; an autopsy confirmed gunshot wounds as the cause of death and the death was ruled a homicide.
Authorities described the motive as robbery, and Dolton trustee and community activist Andrew Holmes characterized the incident as a robbery gone bad. No arrests were announced immediately after the shooting and the Dolton police said they were continuing to investigate and seek information that could identify the suspects.
The community reacted with shock and mourning, and local leaders called for increased efforts to address violence and public safety. If anyone has information that could help identify the people involved, please share it with Dolton police.
