Xe’Quan Campbell was 16 and a student at Carbondale Community High School when he was shot and killed on November 1, 2019. Police responded about 2:44 a.m. to 1225 W. Freeman Street and found him suffering from a gunshot wound; he later died of his injuries.

Campbell and his brother had been exposed to gun violence before: earlier in 2019 he said he’d disarmed another student on a school bus and that both boys had been threatened at gunpoint. They had also witnessed the death of a cousin in a 2013 drive-by shooting. His killing came amid a string of shootings in Carbondale in the weeks beforehand.

The community held a vigil with friends, family and leaders to mourn him and call for action. No arrests or suspects have been publicly identified and the investigation remains open. If anyone knew Xe’Quan or has information that could help solve this case, please come forward.
