Larry Matthews, a 27-year-old African American man, was shot to death on July 8, 2019, in Harvey, Illinois. He was found near 154th Street and Dixie Highway with a fatal gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at 3:30 a.m.; an autopsy confirmed the gunshot wound as the cause of death and ruled the death a homicide.

The shooting occurred outside the nightclub Let’s Playy at 15420 Dixie Highway after a fight in the club’s parking lot. Harvey police and Illinois State Police crime scene investigators responded. Police said multiple people, including club security officers, were believed to have fired shots during the dispute; no other injuries were reported. The club was temporarily closed and the city later tightened late-night operating restrictions after a history of violent incidents there.
