Anthony L. Burgess, a 26-year-old African American man, was shot and killed just after midnight on April 2, 2019, in the 3100 block of Paul Street in Alton, Illinois. Police responding to reports of gunfire found Burgess on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds; he was taken to a local hospital but died of his injuries.
Investigators identified 24-year-old Reginald L. Searles of Alton as the primary suspect; Searles was taken into custody later that morning and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. Authorities described the shooting as connected to domestic issues between two witnesses, not a random attack. Burgess was the second young man in Alton to die from gun violence within two weeks, a pattern that alarmed the community and officials.
Does anyone have information about Burgess, the circumstances that night, or witnesses who might not yet have spoken to investigators?
