On February 3, 2019, Kyle Tucker, 35, was fatally shot in the head at the Cedar Inn bar in Cedarville, Illinois. An argument between Devin Marcum, 23 of Freeport, and another patron, Michael Steinhauser, escalated; witnesses say Marcum drew a gun and Tucker stepped in, trying to persuade Marcum to put the weapon down. Marcum opened fire. Another man, Shaun Bradbury, 36, was also shot and later died; Steinhauser survived a gunshot wound to the neck.
Police arrested Devin Marcum at the scene and found a handgun matching the caliber used. Marcum was charged in connection with the two deaths and the attempted killing of Steinhauser. At trial, the defense argued self-defense or defense of others, while witnesses described Tucker’s actions as an attempt to de-escalate rather than provoke the confrontation. The verdict and sentence occurred after the shooting; the case had a profound impact on the victims’ families, including Tucker’s mother Sharie Hoster, who spoke of enduring grief and an inability to forgive.
