Matthew E. Lockett, a 24‑year‑old African American man from East St. Louis, was shot and killed on December 30, 2018, in O’Fallon, Illinois. Officers responded around 6:52 p.m. to reports of shots fired in the 1700 block of West Highway 50 at Castle Acres Mobile Home Park and found Lockett in the middle of the street with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital and later died of his injuries.
Investigators with the O’Fallon Police Department and the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis reported a light‑colored vehicle, possibly white and with dark‑colored wheels, leaving the area at the time of the shooting; that vehicle description was treated as a key lead. A 26‑year‑old man, James Garrett, was charged with one count of Armed Violence and one count of Unlawful Delivery of Cannabis in connection with Lockett’s death; his bond was set at $65,000.
Anyone who was in the Castle Acres area on December 30, 2018, or who has information about the light‑colored vehicle is asked to contact investigators.
