Twelve-year-old Marqueis Gray of Decatur, Illinois, died after being accidentally shot in the chest on November 12, 2018. The shooter was a 20-year-old family friend, Avante Flesch, who reportedly was playing with a gun when it discharged. Marqueis was taken to the hospital and died shortly after arrival.

Avante Flesch was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to seven years in prison. The case drew sharp local attention to gun safety and responsibility after the fatal, accidental shooting by someone known to the family.
