Shaprie Smith-Tate, a 25-year-old woman from Chicago, was fatally shot outside D Hangout Bar and Grill at 550 S. McLean Boulevard in Elgin, Illinois, around 12:22 a.m. on September 9, 2018. She was one of four people struck when an altercation escalated into gunfire; she suffered multiple gunshot wounds and later died at Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin.
The altercation involved several people, including Shaprie’s brother, 23-year-old Shannon Smith, who the Elgin Police Department identified as the primary suspect and say opened fire, wounding two other women and one man. Police report Shannon fled the scene in a vehicle that was later recovered in Chicago, and an arrest warrant was issued on multiple counts of first-degree murder. Authorities warned he may be armed and dangerous and asked the public not to approach him while seeking tips.
The family and community have been deeply affected by Shaprie’s death. If anyone has information about the shooting or Shannon Smith’s whereabouts, please contact the Elgin Police Department.
