David Sankey was 16 and from Champaign, Illinois, when he died of a gunshot wound to the head on August 28, 2018. He was a former Central High School student and a member of the READY program. Officers responding to reports of shots fired found him and he was taken to Carle Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators arrested two men in connection with the case. Darrion White, 19 at the time, pleaded guilty to reckless discharge of a firearm after admitting to firing shots into area homes; prosecutors dropped six murder counts as part of his plea and he received a 10-year prison sentence on weapons charges. Jaquaveon Faust, 22 at the time, was arrested and charged with murder; his arrest warrant bond was set at $2 million and he was held in Champaign County Jail awaiting further proceedings.
