Stephen Shapiro, a 71-year-old prominent attorney, was shot to death on August 13, 2018, at his Northfield home in Winnetka, Illinois. According to accounts, his brother-in-law, 66-year-old John Gately III, arrived uninvited demanding to see his sister, Joan Shapiro. When Stephen refused him entry, Gately opened fire and fatally shot Stephen in the chest.
Reports say the dispute grew out of long‑running family and financial tensions; Joan had previously supported her brother financially and had recently stopped. After shooting Stephen, Gately tried to shoot Joan but the gun jammed and she escaped to call police. Gately then fled to his Winnetka apartment and barricaded himself, prompting a multi‑hour standoff with law enforcement that ended with his surrender.
Stephen Shapiro was remembered for his appellate practice and work before the U.S. Supreme Court. Does anyone have information about the family conflict or the events that led up to that day?
