Xavier T. Hartman, 19, of Galva, Illinois, died June 19, 2018 after a single-car crash in rural Henry County. A confrontation with 58-year-old Jim Love followed the crash. During that altercation Love shot Hartman in the leg, hitting the femoral artery; the wound proved fatal. Hartman was unarmed at the time.
Love was initially charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and aggravated discharge of a firearm. A grand jury later reduced the murder count to involuntary manslaughter; the other firearm-related charges remained pending and carried significant prison exposure. Love’s next scheduled court appearance was July 17, 2018.
Hartman had a prior conviction for mob action from an assault in June 2017 and was on probation when he died. Family and friends remembered his love of the outdoors, his sense of humor, and his devotion to loved ones. Has anyone in the area shared memories of Xavier or seen events around that June 19 crash?
