On June 18, 2018, 22-year-old Corey D. Jackson was fatally shot inside an apartment at 311 Riley Drive in Bloomington, Illinois. The attack also killed 22-year-old Nathaniel A. Pena and 33-year-old Juan Carlos Perez-Macedo; Pena’s 4-year-old son was critically injured and later paralyzed. Investigators found no sign of forced entry, suggesting the shooter was known to the victims or already inside the apartment.

Forensic evidence tied a .40 caliber handgun to the deaths of Jackson and Pena while Perez-Macedo was killed with a .380 caliber firearm. A .40 caliber magazine and earbuds matching those the alleged shooter was seen wearing in a social media video were recovered at the scene. Cell phone records showed coordination for a getaway to Peoria, including a $200 offer to a relative, indicating planning and an attempted flight after the crime.

The court found 24-year-old Sydney Mays Jr. guilty at a February 2021 bench trial of multiple counts related to the killings. In October 2021 he received three consecutive life terms without parole for the murders and an additional 50-year term for the attempted murder of the child. Does anyone have memories of Corey or details about that apartment complex that could shed more light on what happened that night?
