Juan Carlos Perez-Macedo, 33, was killed on June 18, 2018, in Bloomington, Illinois, during a shooting at an apartment complex on Riley Drive that left two other people dead and a young child paralyzed. The attack was described as a robbery gone wrong aimed at Nate Pena, who had been identified as a drug dealer and was targeted after large amounts of cash were seen on social media.
Investigators reported two firearms were used: a .40 caliber handgun and a .380 caliber pistol. Forensic testing attributed the bullets that killed Perez-Macedo to the .380 caliber gun. Sydney Mays was convicted on all 11 counts against him, including nine counts of first-degree murder. In October 2021 Mays was sentenced in absentia to three life terms plus 50 years. Maria Sanchez, Perez-Macedo’s wife, gave a victim impact statement asking for a harsh sentence.
