Matthew G. Brown was 18 and from Mackinaw, Illinois, when he died of gunshot wounds and internal bleeding on April 20, 2018, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. The Peoria County Coroner, Jamie Harwood, reported Brown had been shot five times; the final autopsy was pending toxicology at that time.
Tazewell County sheriff’s deputies responded that morning to a report of an armed man at Brown’s home. The Illinois State Police opened an investigation into the shooting. Tazewell County State’s Attorney Stu Umholtz later concluded that the use of deadly force by Deputy Eccles was legally justified.
Brown’s mother, Susan Brown, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Mackinaw, Tazewell County, the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office and the officers named, alleging Matthew was in a mental health crisis, was complying with officers’ orders, and should have been handled by properly trained personnel. Does anyone have information about Matthew’s condition that morning or the events leading up to the deputies’ arrival?
