On November 25, 2017, at about 4:10 a.m., Champaign police responded to a reported shooting in the 2500 block of W. Springfield Avenue. Officers found 28-year-old Martrell Johnson with a gunshot wound in the parking lot of the Country Brook Apartments, where he had been attending a party. Johnson was taken to a hospital and later died of his injuries. A confrontation at the party preceded the shooting.
An arrest warrant was issued on November 27, 2017, for 29-year-old Travis Marshall of Champaign on charges of Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon. Surveillance video later showed Marshall firing a shot in Johnson’s direction that struck him. Marshall, who had a prior attempted armed violence conviction from 2006 and was on parole for unlawful possession of a controlled substance at the time, was arrested on July 26, 2018, and was formally charged with three counts of First Degree Murder. The investigation remains active and authorities are seeking additional information.
Did anyone at the Country Brook Apartments that night see the confrontation or the shooting?
