On the night of September 4, 2001, 20-year-old Karen Sabrina Wills was fatally shot through a window in her family’s home on Kings Wharf Place in the Wakefield subdivision of Waldorf, Maryland. The shot struck her in the back of the neck at about 1:30 a.m. while she was washing dishes after a late dinner; several others were in the house but Wills was the only person injured and was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
Karen worked as a sales associate at Marshalls and had ambitions to model and run a daycare. Investigators examined multiple leads, including an ex-boyfriend who was reportedly considered a primary suspect because of prior threats; forensic testing of his vehicle produced no conclusive evidence and he invoked his right to remain silent when questioned. Detectives also explored whether Wills was not the intended target, since the shot was fired through a window with blinds that obscured the view.
The Charles County Sheriff’s Office keeps the case open and it is considered cold. Various rewards have been offered, but no arrests have been made and no official suspect has been named. Did anyone in Waldorf at the time have information that could finally move this case forward?
